This is a RECAP of recent information printed in TNT concerning the events leading up to this ballot:

DECEMBER-JANUARY 1997 TNT

RECORDINGS (Corresp. Secy. column) announcement that the BSCA Board of Directors sent its membership a ballot "that all Belgians be recognized by AKC as determined by their color and coat length that they are born with and that Malinois, Tervuren, Groenendael and when recognized by AKC, Lakenois maintain separate point schedules and representation in the group ring." The results of the vote were 71.8% of those voting, and 68.1% of the total membership voted to pass the motion. The BSCA asked the ABTC and ABMC to send a similar ballot, and the ABTC board was currently reviewing this possibility.

FEBRUARY-MARCH 1997 TNT

KAY’S COLUMN (President’s Column) urged members to educate themselves on the history of the Tervuren and then respond to the ballot vote and opinion poll.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Opinions on recombination issues were stated from: Dana Mackonis, Bob & Barbara Krohn, and Joanne Thielan

JANUARY 1997

ABTC mails a ballot/opinion poll out to the membership to hear the wishes of the membership on discussing recombination issues with the AKC and the other clubs, and for opinion on issues regarding the future of registrations and the club.

APRIL-MAY 1997 TNT

KAY’S COLUMNKay spoke of a letter just received from AKC stating that the AKC was opposed to allowing Parent Variety Clubs, and of the AKC’s sudden clarification on it’s 1995 registration policy change from the 3 to a 1 generation rule. These communications were sent to the clubs before any opinion poll results were heard from ABTC or ABMC and without any consultation with the ABTC.

RECORDINGSthe ABTC board votes to form a committee of Janina Laurin and Karen Johnson to represent ABTC in discussions with the AKC and the other Belgian parent clubs.

Results of the ballot opinion poll taken in March were announced:

On the ballot, 493 were returned, representing 47% of the membership, with 88.6% of the votes in favor of pursuing discussions with the AKC and the other Belgian Clubs, and informing the membership of the outcome.

On the opinion poll,

YES 372 NO 89 To register all Belgians as the coat color and length they are born with.

YES 434 NO 29 To maintain current practice of separate point scales, separate showing in the breed and group rings.

YES 421 NO 37 To maintain the current clubs as the representative clubs for each coat type.

YES 367 NO 90 To maintain three distinct standards, each controlled by its own club.

The letter sent by Jim Crowley of the AKC to all three clubs was published. It stated the AKC’s recent clarification of its 1995 1 generation rule on imports. It also stated that the AKC Board is opposed to establishing Parent Clubs for varieties, but that the AKC was receptive to the concept of changing registration policy if all 3 clubs were willing to consider unification into one club. (this letter arrived before the ABTC had counted its above ballots).

AKC DELEGATES REPORT – Janina Laurin printed a letter from AKC to all three Belgian clubs dated March 17, 1997 in which it clarified its policy regarding the registration requirements on imports.

AD-HOC COMMITTEE REPORTKaren Johnson asks for members to help gather factual information and send it to her for future education articles for the membership.

JUNE-JULY 1997 TNT

PRESIDENTS COLUMNRoberta Whitesides assures the membership that the entire membership will be allowed to vote by secret ballot on any issues that will affect our club and breed. She encourages members to contact her or any board member with their concerns or their suggestions.

RECORDINGSSome members are experiencing difficulties in registering imports because of the AKC’s March clarification of its 1995 3 generation change. The ABTC board votes to "support Allison Ruhe’s request that the ABTC support her and others affected by the AKC’s policy clarification, and that all Belgian Tervuren bred and/or imported based on the guidelines in existence between June 1995 and March 1997, be granted full AKC registration."

A letter from AKC was published, in which they ask each Belgian Club to send two representatives to a high level meeting at AKC to discuss issues affecting these breeds and breed clubs and help determine how AKC may best address them.

JUNE 2, 1997

Representatives from all 3 Belgian Parent Clubs meet in New York for a day of discussion of Belgian breed and club issues.

JUNE 3, 1997

Representatives from all 3 Belgian Parent Clubs met with AKC President Al Cheaure, Secretary James Crowley and Vice President Planning and Development Dennis Sprung.

The full report of these two days’ meetings as prepared and signed by these 5 representatives was included as an insertion in the June-July issue of TNT.

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 1997 TNT

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN Roberta Whitesides announces that we have official word from AKC regarding registration and recombination issues. Roberta cautions the members about asking for opinions across the internet from people who may be "guessing" at answers. She encourages the members to contact board members.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR – Don MacManus writes a letter regarding his opinion on recombination.

AD-HOC COMMITTEE REPORT- A letter from AKC Secretary Mr. James Crowley is included. Also a letter from the Belgian Shepherd Dog Association of Great Britain; "Harmonisation of The Showing of Belgian Shepherd Dogs throughout the World".

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 1997 TNT

PRESIDENT’S COLUMNRoberta Whitesides explains that a ballot will be mailed to the membership to see if the club should take action to recombine. She gives an explanation on how variety clubs work, and invites the membership to contact a board member with questions.

RECORDINGSAnnouncements were made of some board decisions concerning content of an upcoming ballot on recombination.

A letter dated 9/30/97 from the ABTC law firm regarding the upcoming recombination ballot wording was sent to all members as in insertion with this issue of TNT.

DECEMBER-JANUARY TNT

PRESIDENT’S COLUMNRoberta talks about the dangers of believing all posts on internet Belgian Lists on the issue of recombination. She clarified some points of misinformation she had seen, and again encouraged members to contact their ABTC board with their opinions and communications.

FEBRUARY 1998

After months of discussion with AKC and the three Belgian Clubs, the ABTC Board agrees to mail this ballot/opinion poll to the membership in order to determine what action the membership wishes to take in the recombination issue.
