Idiopathic Epilepsy in the Belgian TervurenIdeopathic Epilepsy is one of the genetic problems that plagues the well-being of the Belgian Tervuren. It affects nearly 30 different dog breeds. Preliminary studies in the Belgian Tervuren indicates that although this is a heritable disorder governed by many genes (polygenic mode of inheritance), there exists a single gene of very large effect on the incidence of epilepsy. The epileptic condition influenced by this particular gene is inherited as an autosomal recessive. The specific objective of this project is to develop a genetic marker associated with that locus by utilizing the emerging canine genetic map. We have prepared some materials in an effort to answer some questions you may have and to help you better understand this study:
Confidentiality is guaranteed in this study. Participants can feel comfortable that no dogs will ever be publicly identified, nor will the participants who have submitted samples. In an effort to help further studies that might lead to the eradication of this disease, the American Belgian Tervuren Club has elected to participate in a study being conducted at the University of California, Davis. This study is also being supported by a grant from the American Kennel Club and funding from the Belgian Sheepdog Club of America. |
